Synopsis Claire Denis recovers the formal language she had abandoned in Let the sunshine in to continue experimenting with the narrative style that has characterised her cinema over the last three decades. On this occasion, the Frenchwoman adds science fiction to the catalogue of genres that have already passed the filter of her transformative gaze. His constant themes (desire, violence, colonialism) and the political component of his cinema (a ship full of prisoners to colonize outer space) remain, while new ethical concerns, such as the artificial creation of human lives for merely scientific purposes, make their presence felt. But although High Life challenges the viewer with its oppressive atmosphere, hermetic shots and uncomfortable reflections of rigour, its spirit is much brighter than that of his previous feature films. We’re all entitled to a second chance.
