Synopsis Freddy, an 11 year old boy living in the 70’s in a small Belgian town, has a dream (the same as most of his fellow countrymen at the time): meeting Eddy Merckx, cyclist extraordinaire and source of national pride. The opportunity arises when the supermarket that has just been opened in town organizes a cycling race for children. The winner will meet the champion. Freddy has been training all summer long and is more than ready to take part in the race, but there are a couple of problems: his father, owner of an old butcher shop, hates the supermarket that is ruining his business, and Freddy suffers from chronic incontinence, which prevents him from leading a normal life. Will Freddy be able to overcome all of the obstacles? Or are there obstacles that cannot be overcome?
Director bio
Gert Embrechts attended HIBK St. Lucas in Brussels in order to study filmmaking and finished his training with workshops in South by Southwest in Roma and the Binger Film Institute in Amsterdam. He has worked as assistant director for over ten years with such directors as Ben Sombogaart, Frank Van Passel or Peter Greenaway. His two short films, 13 (1999) and Vincent (2001), have received international awards and have been sold abroad. He wrote the screenplay for Stricken (2009), a blockbuster in the Netherlands, based on the novel of the same name and written by Kluun. Allez, Eddy! is his first movie as director.
