Synopsis

Esther’s teenage years are not being easy at all. Her classmates at the elitist private school she attends regard her as nothing but a freak. At home, things are not much better, and she does not always succeed in her attempts at fitting in a “normal” Jewish family. During the celebration of her Bat Mitzvah she sneaks out and makes friends with Sunni, a girl who does not resemble her classmates at all. The two girls decide it’s time for having fun. Esther will attend Sunni’s school pretending to be a Swedish student. Her boring life is about to turn all the way around.

Director bio

Cathy Randall was born in Johannesburg in 1973. She was a journalist before she started working in the film industry. In 2002, she was awarded a scholarship to the Los Angeles Film School for her script of Hey Hey It’s Esther Blueburger, which the following year was nominated for the AWGIEs, the Australian Writer’s Guild awards. This film, based on her own script, is her debut as a director (2008).
