Synopsis Johannes, a postgraduate student, has just started working at a department of Munich Technical University where he meets a colleague, Farid, of Algerian origin, who is involved in the same research as he is. They soon become friends, but the friendship is endangered when the Secret Service contacts Johannes to spy on Farid because they think he is a 'sleeper', that is, a temporarily inactive terrorist. Johannes is reluctant to spy on his friend, but the parallel nature of their lives drags them into rivalry. They are competing for honours in the same research and, furthermore, they both fall in love with the same waitress. When Farid begins, rather unfairly, to get the praises at work and win the girl, Johannes feels jilted and begins to toy with the idea of whether or not to start spying and reporting on his friend to the authorities.
