valieVALIE EXPORT, the protagonist of the 55FICX main focus, an Austrian artist born in Linz in 1940. We call her an artist and not a filmmaker because she hasn’t just done cinema in the traditional sense of the word, but she has stood out in sculpture, photography and an art in which she’s undoubtedly a pioneer: performances using the female body as an artistic element, a clear precedent of what is currently represented by the work of artists like Marina Abramovich. On al of this fields, our protagonist has used a wide panoply of resources and expressive modalities to launch a determined, specific message, because in VALIE EXPORT art and politics, understood in its widest sense, travel parallel roads- This way it’s impossible to de-contextualize her work from her activist work against the patriarchal society or the Nazi remnants still present in Austrian society in the second half of the 20th century. Both are exactly the same thing, the background and the form united in a conjunction that make VALIE EXPORT into an indispensable reference to understand the artistic and social movements of yesterday and today.

The focus FICX has dedicated to VALIE EXPORT on its 55th edition is made up of two feature films:

Invisible Adversaries, from 1977, her debut film. A photographer discovers that an alien race is occupying the bodies of human beings. Rewritten with a feminist point of view from Don Siegel’s Invasion of the body snatchers using experimental cinema techniques.

The Practice of Love, from 1985, her most well-known film. The protagonist, a woman, swings between two love stories with two men, which will lead her to know the real meaning of machismo, of the corrupt way of understanding relationships in a patriarchal society.

Aside from these two feature films, the VALIE EXPORT special will offer two different short films programmes, one with her most traditional works (if such a term can be applied to the Austrian artist) and another with her performance works, those where VALIE uses her body as a weapon to transmit her discourse and an installation gathering more than 50 years of career of our focus’s protagonist.

Martín Cuesta
A programme composed of nine short films made by VALIE EXPORT, focusing on one of her facets that best define her work throughout time: those where she uses her own body to develop different performance activities. Always with a feminist background that characterizes her work as a whole, here it’s incarnated by herself as a synecdoche of the global female body.

A programme of five shortfilms where VALIE EXPORT developed her most narrative aspect, but always with her characteristic link to the dominant artistic trend from the second half of the 20th century in Europe, and of course without abandoning the feminist look and the point of view primarily female in the social and relational description of our present. An outstanding opportunity to take in, in small doses, the unfathomable work of the Linz-born artist.
