Elisa Cepedal

Ricardo Apilánez
Economy shots, frame and production precision, presence outside of the field as a representation of a harsh environment, gestural austerity in the interpretation so nothing takes away from the essential. One single woman with three faces and in three different circumstances, besieged by the same concerns and anxieties, the same disagreement, the same dissatisfaction stages with Bressoanian rigour. The Asturian Elisa Cepedal’s work, a graduate from the London Film School, has a stylistic and thematic experience extremely solid, and her three short films represent a prismatic composition about the complexity and sentimental conflict of the young female protagonist. Identity and rootlessness, the generational clash, alienation and frustration, nostalgia, escape and return. In a game of parallelisms, coincidences and contrasts where experience and reflection of the filmmaker are put into her characters, articulating them.

FICX 55, in response a unitary call, offers the unique opportunity of enjoying three of her short films in one single programme: La playa (2010), selected in festivals like BAFICI, Raindance, Festival de Cine de Guadalajara (Mexico), or New York’s Spanish Cinema Now. Ay pena (2011), winner of the Principality of Asturias’ Premio Nuevos Realizadores in 2010 had its world premiere at the FICX 49 Sección Oficial de Cortometrajes, and would later on appear at Cinema Jove or the prestigious New Directos/New Films, organized by the MoMA and New York’s Film Society of the Lincoln Center; and El Desastre (2014), Cepedal’s contribution to the collective movie Llar (2014) premiered globally at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Mar de Plata Both La Playa and Ay Pena were nominated in the categories for Best Short Film and Best Photography at the Fuji Film Awards 2011 and 2012 in the United Kingdom.

El trabajo o ¿a quién le pertenece el mundo? will be the title of her first feature film, which she began filming this summer and will continue until the end of 2017.
