▪ Audience will have the chance to enjoy the first retrospective dedicated to these two filmmakers in Europe.
Gijón Film Festival will honour Tizza Covi y Rainer Frimmel’s tender and honest films. The humanist fiction of this couple of filmmakers has taken them to a respected position within the current European cinema. They will attend FICX 56th edition to present their first retrospective in Europe.

Within their recognizable style, there are films which appeal to the formal aspect of a documentary to narrate fiction. Covi (Bolzano, Italy, 1971) and Frimmel (Vienna, Austria, 1971) break realism to produce hybrids that arise from absolute freedom when telling stories with infinite complicity with the camera. The result: touching productions awarded in festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, and also Gijón, where ‘La pivellina’ won Principality of Asturias Award for Best Feature and Patrizia Gerardi received Best Actress Award in 2009.

Covi and Frimmel —whose cinema is considered as the heir of Italian neo-realism— established their own production company, Vento Film, in order to produce their films independently.
FICX audience will have the chance to watch four of their films.

The selection includes three fiction films: ‘La pivellina’ (2009), a total success in FICX 2009 and also awarded in the Directors’ Fortnight section of Cannes Film Festival; ‘The Shine of Day’ (2012) winner of three awards at Locarno festival; and ‘Mister Universo’ (2016) awarded with FIPRESCI in Locarno, in which they recover settings from their previous films: caravans, fairs and Italian suburbs. The retrospective also includes ‘Babooska’ (2005), focused on the life of a young artist who runs a travelling circus in remote areas of Italy. This film was awarded in Berlin.

Furthermore, the audience will have the chance to attend meetings with Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel after the screenings.
