The 55th edition of Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival keeps adding proposals to its programme. An array of works that document the local and the universal, our daily reality and the looks towards the past.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS

Like every year, aside form the films that make up the different competition section, FICX is offering its audience a series of special projections that meet several functions: they serve as a way for the public to meet with the awarded guests, honour key people in the business, etc. On this 55th edition, these will be the FICX special screenings:

Daydreams (L’indomptée, Caroline Deruas - France 2016)

The prestigious French writer’s debut film, a regular in Philippe Garrel’s movies. It tells the story of the relationship between two young artists with individual freedom as the background. Caroline Deruas herself will visit Gijón to meet the audience.

No es tan fría Siberia (Isabel Coixet - Spain 2016) + Cosas que nunca te dije (Isabel Coixet - Spain 1996)

Isabel Coixet, winner of the FICX 2017 Mujer de Cine Award will present a double programme made up of a recent short film and her well-known debut film. A unique opportunity to link past and present when it comes to the brilliant career of one of the most important directors in modern cinema.

Amor y amistad (Love & Friendship, Whit Stillman - Ireland, France, Netherlands 2016)

Jury President for the #55FICX and Oscar nominated Whit Stillman will act as host for this screening and meeting with the audience with his latest film, presented at the Sundance Festival and starring Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Scigny and Stephen Fry.

Homage to Abbas Kiarostami: 24 Frames (Abbas Kiarostami - Iran, France 2017)

The genius Iranian director left us in 2016, but his work will stay in everyone’s memory for all the cinema enthusiasts in general and the FICX’s in particular. Spanish premiere of his posthumous film will serve to honour his career, full of undisputed masterworks.

ANIMAFICX

Mazinger Z Infinity (Junji Shimizu - Japón 2017)

Spanish premiere. A space to meet nostalgia. The most famous mecha from the 80s returns to the big screen to face his old enemy, Dr. Hell. A new opportunity for adults and kids to once again hear ¡¡Puños Fuera!!

ESBILLA

Fire’s Daughters (Stéphane Breton - France 2017)

Spanish premiere. Gijón/Xixón International Film Festival and Asociación de Comadres once again collaborate in the screening of a film that allows us to know first-hand an issue concerning women and its reality. In this case it will be the eventful life of the Kurdish soldier women fighting against DAESH in the Syrian War. A documentary directed by Stéphane Breton where she tells us the day to day of these freedom fighters.

Lluz d’agostu en Xixón (Alejandro Nafría - Spain 2017)

World premrie of the documentary that follows Nacho Vegas life, one of the most important figures in Asturias music for decades, while it paints a multifaceted portrait of Gijón/Xixón.

LA NOCHE INNOMBRABLE WITH… JESÚS PALACIOS

The most terrifying and amusing night during FICX week with its traditional master of ceremonies. Double programme ( short films and feature films) to enjoy the blood and screams present in the most authentic genre with the short film Fucking Bunnies and the feature film Game of Death.

SPANISH SHORT FILMS NIGHT

Five proposals in a small format but with big results to discover new values in modern Spanish cinema.

SCANDINAVIAN SHORTS

Scandinavia has some of the most powerful cinema in the continent, with individual characteristics present in each country. The FICX releases a programme made by Jorge Rivero with an exclusive collection of short films that escape from the snow and darkness clichés to look for light and artistic beauty.
