convergencias
Convergencias (Convergences) aims at creating a forum for programming, meeting and debate for critics. Spanish critics defend hidden gems that cannot be seen in Spain, films they have seen in different festivals and that they want to share with the audience.

Gijon International Film Festival adds a new section to its 52 edition. Aware of the importance of critics when interpreting the latest trends in nowadays films and in line with its objective of having a program that pays special attention to the continuous renewal of film language and for the most daring films, the Festival wishes to add a new section to its 52 edition.

Convergencias aims at creating a forum for programming, meeting and debate for critics. Spanish critics defend hidden gems that cannot be seen in Spain, films they have seen in different festivals and that they want to share with the audience.

The initiative is coordinated by Asociación Cultural Convergencias de la Crítica Cinematográfica, led by Martín Cuesta, director of the web Cinema Ad Hoc and Víctor Paz, co-publisher of A Cuarta Parede.

According to the representives of the Asociación “One of the key pillars of Convergencias is the democratization of the access to the exercise of programming. Any professional who can proof writing reviews regularly in any written or audio visual media has been allowed to present their candidate film. The aim is to create that way a space so that younger critics can also give their opinion and set up dialogues between critics of different ages, backgrounds and styles. This debate is necessary among critics but also with the audience, as they are the final users of the reviews and of such cycles as this.”

With a suggestive style, focusing more on building the atmosphere than on developing a plot, Atlántida falls along the lines of other South American directors like Lucrecia Martel or Dominga Sotomayor.

Concrete Clouds

1997, Mutt goes back to Bangkok to his father’s funeral. Memories tie him to the place and he decides to stay to look for an old girlfriend. A film about the power of memory and about how memory is after all just a sort of fiction, encapsulated in this case in pop videoclips adding some playful lightness to a film with its sensibility as high as the clouds in the title.
