Gijón International Film Festival has programmed a season of films by the French director Éric Rohmer, which will include some of his most representative works, such as My Night with Maud, Pauline at the beach and My girlfriend's boyfriend. The cycle will take place on Saturdays at 20:30 h at Centro Municipal Integrado Pumarín Gijón-Sur, from 4th October until 15th November.

Rohmer is one of the main references in contemporary European cinema. A graduate in Literature, he worked as a teacher of that subject and published his first novel, entitled Elizabeth, in 1946. Two years later, he started working as a film critic for La Revue du cinéma and then on Les temps modernes, La Gazzete du cinéma (which he founded himself), Arts and, from 1951 onwards, Cahiers du cinéma (where he was chief editor from 1957 to 1963), while writing, along with C. Chabrol, a well-known monography on Alfred Hitchcock. In all his texts, he carries out, just like his mentor, A. Bazin, a deep reflection on cinema, which will exert a decisive influence on the theoretical foundations of the Nouvelle Vague. Along with J. Rivette, he became one of the master minds of the movement and one of the leaders of the Rive droite trend. He starts shooting his first shorts by that time as well, until his feature film debut in 1959 with Le Signe du Lion.

He later decided to group his films in series, such as the Moral Tales and the Comedies and Proverbs. The cycle to be seen in Gijón Sur collects some of the most representative films in these important series. From the first one, the films to be screened are Ma nuit chez Maud (My Night with Maud) (1969) and Le genou de Claire (Claire's Knee) (1970), and from the second, Pauline à la plage (Pauline at the Beach) (1983), L'Ami de Mon Amie (My Girlfriend's Boyfriend) (1987) and Le beau mariage (A Good Marriage) (1982). Four of Rohmer's shorts are part of the cycle, as well, for being of great importance in terms of understanding his body of work, and they will be screened in one session. Charlotte et son steak (1960), La carrière de Suzanne (1963), La boulangère de Monceau (1963) and Nadja à Paris (1964).
