Synopsis

Lech Kowalski articulates East of Paradise as a double confession. An 80-year-old woman tells the camera her experience in the Soviet Gulag. Maria was the daughter of a Polish family obliged to leave their homeland during the war. After a long journey they get to Siberia, where they learn to survive and must face a painful way to find again freedom. The oral memory flows in a fantastic way as if her desire to testify would lead  her to build up a story, in which she revives characters she met during her life, which makes her go again through painful moments that destroyed her youth. Her words recall sadness and cause a feeling of helplessness in view of a hidden story – Stalin’s purge- which sealed numerous lives. In Maria Werla´s words her life was in the power’s hands
