Synopsis

Premiered in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival, Villalobos is a documentary which follows the Chilean DJ and producer, Ricardo Villalobos, in his performances in such emblematic homes of techno as The Berghain in Berlin, Amnesia and Privilege in Ibiza, and the Sonar Festival. Specializing in micro-house and minimal techno, Villalobos is one of the most important figures of electronic music. In addition to seeing Villalobos in action, immersed in the club atmosphere, the interviews shed light on his chaotic, yet disciplined way of work.

Director bio

Karmaker was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1965, and currently lives in Berlin. With his provocative style and highly charged political content, he is considered one of the most controversial modern German directors. He has been directing documentaries since 1984, when he filmed Eine Freundschaft in Deutschland in Super8. In 1992 he participated in the Locarno Festival with Warheads, and in 1994 he founded his own production company, Pantera Film GMBH. His first feature length film, Der Totmacher (1995), was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and received awards at various international festivals. His later work includes Manila (award-winning film at Locarno), Das Himmlet Project (whose rights were bought by the MOMA), 196bpm, Nightsongs (nominated for the Golden Bear at Berlin Festival) Land der Vernichtung and Between the Devil and The Wide Blue Sea (which also received an award at Locarno).
