Synopsis 1984 in the USSR. The exhaustion of the regime is plain for everyone to see and the strictness of the past is beginning to loosen up. There is one year to go before Gorbachov makes it to power and perestroika starts. In a provincial town, the daughter of an important member of the party goes missing after a party in a club. Nobody has seen anything, there are no leads, no suspects. That same day, a horrid crime is commited in a house. There, on the contrary, it seems clear the the murderer is the owner of the house. Police chief Zhurov will be the one in charge of investigating both cases with no apparent connection between them.
Director bio Born in 1959 in Yekaterinburg, Aleksei Balabanov is a leading figure in Russian cinema. In 1981 he graduated from Translation Faculty of Gorky Teachers' Training University. From 1983 to 1987 Alexei worked as an assistant director at Sverdlovsk film studio. Later Balabanov studied at the experimental course "Authors' Cinema" of the High Courses for Scriptwriters and Film Directors, graduating in 1990. He made his directorial debut in 1989 with the documentary Egor and Nastia. His first feature film, Happy Days, was released in 1992 and won instant fame across Europe. He has written and directed films based on the works of Daniil Kharms and Franz Kafka and he took part in the collective film Pribytiye poyezda (The Arrival of a Train) (1995) dedicated to the 100th anniversary of cinematography; his segment Trofim won a number of cinema awards. However, it was the criminal action film Brat (The Brother) (1997) that became Aleksei Balabanov's real breakthrough, to the point of shooting a sequel in 2000.
