Synopsis Nick Twisp is sixteen years old and resides in Oakland with Estelle, his mother, whose sexual life is disorderly, without her boyfriend Jerry. Nick meets a young girl called Sheeni while camping at Ukiah and they immediately start a romantic relationship, although not without complications. In addition to many other obstacles in his way, Nick has to compete with her boyfriend, Trent, to win her attention. However, rather than giving up and forgetting about the love he feels for Sheeni, he decides to invent himself an alter-ego called François Dillinger, whose behaviour is much more imposing and non-conformist towards live, but whose impulsive character will bring him lots of trouble. From then on Nick goes through various dangerous situations often bordering on illegality, including a turbulent car trip with Vijay Joshi, his new buddy at high school.
