Father James, is a quiet man, just like any good Irishman, who preaches in a small Irish parish, apparently no less quiet than he. But a bad day comes when he hears on confession someone who has decided to turn him into the target of his hate: he has one week to set his affairs in order because he will be murdered on the following Sunday. At the same time he, who joined the church late after his wife’s death, receives the visit of his daughter, who has tried to commit suicide. We discover little by little and together with Father James, that under the peaceful surface of the village and its inhabitants passions and lies hide, showing the most unnerving, absurd and sinister side of human beings. Trapped between fear and his sense of duty, the priest has to take a decision with no turning back. After The Guard (2011), John Michael McDonagh offers us a new mix of dark comedy, psychological drama and thriller, a surprising cocktail of Irish noir and a moral piece, filled with Beckett’s sense of the absurd, Flann O´Brien’s humour and Synge’s religious musings. Everything is dominated by a blue atmosphere, the structure of a crepuscular western and Brendan Gleeson’s huge presence.
