On 19th October 1797, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos laid the foundation stone of the Royal Asturian Institute, established with the aim of providing scientific and technical training in matters related to seafaring and mining, given the importance of both activities in the region.

The current building is the result of two different construction phases. The first took place between 1797 and 1807 and corresponds to the project by Juan de Villanueva (1739-1811), who designed the ground floor in the Neo-classical style. The second phase corresponds to the extension made between 1887 and 1892, the work of Ricardo Marcos Bausá, which consisted in building two more floors above the original one.

It nowadays comprises the “Antiguo Instituto” (Old Institute) Cultural Centre, an institution of reference for the creation, production and dissemination of art and culture in the city.

It combines its active and varied annual programme with the holding of events and professional meetings in its halls and rooms.
